We are not even half way through 2011, and there are three full years until the finals in Brazil, but the 2014 FIFA World Cup has already started. At least if you live in the more obscure Carribean islands.
The first game was between Montserrat and Belize, and was played yesterday. The visitors won it 2-5, although both teams were actually visitors, as the match was played in Trinidad. Montserrat don't have any suitable pitches, possibly related the island being pretty badly done over a few years ago by a volcano. Deon McCauley has the honour of being both the first scorer of this world cup, and the first man to score a hat trick. And 150 souls got to witness these historic moments.
In defense of Montserrat, joint last in the FIFA rnakings, it is quite a minnow even relative to Belize, with less than 6,000 people, compared to Belize, which can boast 330,000 residents. It is also a British protectorate, so it is really my duty to Queen and Country to protect it.
Well that's one game gone, 831 to go, before we get to Brazil 2014. 203 countries are in the tournament, even Montserrat, although we'll have the tournaments first major shock if they can qualify for the second round of qualfying by overturning this scoreline in three days time when they travel to Belize.
Can brave Montserrat overcome the obstacles of being plagued by a volcano which is apparantly still active and having a smaller pool of talent than the Isle of Skye? Find out on the most dedicated World Cup blog for qualification for 2014!
